Recently, the research group of Huang Qing, a researcher from Hefei Institute of material sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has made a new discovery in anti-cancer pharmacology of Ganoderma lucidum. Ganoderma acid can induce apoptosis and autophagic cell death of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cells.

Ganoderma acid is a pharmacological component of Ganoderma lucidum, which has anti-tumor and anti-proliferation effects. However, there are still many unknown scientific problems in its mechanism.

Huang Qing research group has been carrying out research on Ganoderma lucidum breeding and functional development for many years. Recently, they found that Ganoderma acid can significantly reduce the vitality of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cells at different time and dose, and the effect will be enhanced with the increase of dose. Ganoderma acid can not only induce apoptosis of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma cells, but also induce autophagy, that is, "eat yourself".

"If apoptosis is the 'suicide' of cells, then autophagy is the 'self feeding' of cells, which is an important life process for cells to clear their own garbage and maintain a stable balance." Huang Qing said that the test found that Ganoderma acid can promote the development of autophagy body, while blocking its fusion with autophagy lysosome, resulting in autophagic cell death.

This study provides a theoretical basis for the application of ganoderic acid as an anti-tumor adjuvant in the treatment of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Recently, the international journal "Journal of ethnopharmacology" published the research results.
