Shuangcheng Shadow Puppetry

Shadow Puppetry in the city of Shuangcheng inHeilongjiang province derives from Shadow puppetry of Hebei Leting. Accordingto historical records, in 1756, large amounts of Hebei people in which thereare many artists of shadow puppetry flew over into Heilongjiang province. Theshadow puppetry they played were well-received.


As time flows, in order to meet the aesthetictemperament and interests of local people, the artists of Shadow Puppetry madelocalization gradually through assimilating a good deal of local language andfolk music. The singing of Shuangcheng shadow puppetry is high and clear, using the artistic form of Couple Dance Opera. In the middle of the 19th century, with the popularization of shadow puppetry in this area, it formed the Heilongjiang  artistic charateristics which is high, rough and intense. It has changed from managing the shadowpuppetry to music singing and spoken parts.


Now, after experiencing the most glorious periodin the 1950s and 60s, there are a few singing performance in the shadowpuppetry. It changes to the form of the living theatre.


The amount of full-time artist is less and less. Inorder to protect this precious in tangible cultural heritage,Heilongjiang Art Institute has collected and cleared up some precious audiovisual materials like record to protect and inherit this folk art which is in the danger ofdying out.
