Red beanas an ancient cultivated crop originates in China and it has been planted inmore than 30 countries and regions around the world. It is widely used in foodand health products. Recently, a research team led by professor Wan Pin fromBeijing University of Agriculture, researcher Ling Hongqing and Tian Zhixi fromInstitute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Science combined with Shenzhen Huada Gene Research Institute had completed red bean whole genome sequencing. The research result has been published online on journal PNAS on October 12, 2015.

The teamhas done shotgun sequencing on whole red bean genome through next-generationsequencing and gained 90.88 Gb effective sequence. The team has certificated that red bean was closest with kidney bean by comparing the sequencing resultand known legume genome. Moreover, it still analyzed the difference of starchand fat accumulation between red bean and soybean. These differences were notresulting from the genes number variations, instead they were caused by thegenes transcription expression.

The completion of the red bean genome sequence will improve the identification andcloning of important agronomic trait gene on red bean. It will improve theresearch level on red bean in China as well. The genome information gained fromthe research will provide plentiful data resource for the comparative genomics. It will also contribute to research on the relationship between evolution anddomestication of legume species and analyzes the molecular mechanism formed bythe metabolic differences in the long-term evolution of legume.
