Regulation on Genetically Modified Food was Released in Taiwan
Ministry of Health and Welfare of Taiwan has announced and fully implemented the new labeling regulation relative to GM (Genetically Modified) food. According to the regulation, the managers should clearly mark the food with “GMO” on the label if it contained GM ingredients. On the contrary, if the managers only use non-GM ingredients, they can mark the “NON-GMO”. However, the food may mix in the GM ingredients in an unintentional condition which is beyond the prevention, such as in the process of harvesting, storage and transportation. As for the mixed rate, it was 3% regulated in Taiwan. If the mixed rate is over 3%, it will be regarded as GM ingredients and has to mark “GMO”.
In Taiwan, the management of GM food is according to Food Safety and Hygiene Administration Law. In addition to all kinds of food safety and hygiene requirements, the GM food should be regulated by rules on GM ingredients registration, mandatory labeling, post-market monitoring and so on.
As for the testing method, Food and Drug Department indicates that the international PCR(Q-PCR) can be used.
