Combining with the diminution and growth situation of livestock and poultry genetic resources in Xinjiang, Department of Animal Husbandry has revised the “Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources Protection List” which was issued in July 2009.

According to the article 12 in Law of the People’s Republic of China on Animal Husbandry and the national livestockand poultry genetic resources protection and utilization planning, there are 34 livestock and poultry genetic resources being listed in the List which include 22 Class-1 protection varieties and 12 Class-2 protection varieties.

The Class-1 protection varieties include Hotan sheep, Duolang sheep, Cele black sheep, Kazakh sheep, and Xinjiang goat; Altay white cattle, Kazakh cattle, and Mongolia cattle; Yanqi horse, Kazakh horse, and Balikun horse; Xinjiang donkey, Hetian Qing donkey, and Turpan donkey; Junggar Bactrian camel and Tarim Bactrian camel; Yili goose, Turpan cockfighting, Baicheng You chicken, and Hetian Black chicken; Xinjiang Black bee and Kazakh tobet.

The Class-2protection varieties include 9 sheep breeds, Bazhou yak, Kirgiz horse and Tarimpigeon.

The livestock and poultry genetic resources protection system is a very complicated and huge system with the purpose of protecting the national food security and the economic industry security.

According to the principle of “classification management, emphasized protection”, the Xinjiang region has preliminarily established the livestock and poultry genetic resources protection system with the method of combining the origin preservation and nonlocal gene bank conservation. It takes measures to well conserve the 8 localvarieties which are listed in National Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources Protection List. The national nature reserves and national conservation farms have been set up. The national livestock and poultry genetic resources gene bank has preserved 495 blood samples of 9 livestock and poultry genetic resources, more than 2000 dose of straw frozen semen of 5 livestock and poultry genetic resources and more than 400 frozen embryos of 5 livestock and poultry genetic resources from Xinjiang region. Since 2010, the region carried out the projects of conservation farm (reserve), variety breeding and new varieties cultivation in batches to protect the livestockand poultry genetic resources listed in List.
