Ministry of Education: Universities and research institutes strengthen the self-review of genetic editing in the reproductive system
A month after the He Jiankui gene editing baby incident, the Chinese Ministry of Education officially issued a document requesting that all major universities in China conduct self-review, report all work related to genetic editing before the end of the year, and ensure that these works will not break through the bottom line of morality.
A notice issued by the Ministry of Education on Thursday asked universities to fill out the Self-Checklist of Research Projects Related to Genetic Editing in Colleges and Universities, especially mentioning that universities work with hospitals or other international organizations should pay special attention to research related to genetic editing of germ cells.
In the notice, the Ministry of Education stated: “The self-examination work is mainly aimed at research projects related to gene editing in design biotechnology since January 1st, 2013, including government channel projects, focused on compliance with research ethics and norms, and whether Self-examination exists in violation of relevant laws and regulations. Research activities of affiliated hospitals, international cooperation projects, and projects involving human genetic resources should be the focus of self-examination."
The Ministry of Education's notice not only requires the university to conduct self-audit, but also requires relevant units to submit details of the project and submit recommendations on how to strengthen education in life sciences and medical ethics.
