The World Health Organization announced in Geneva on the 19th that it will widely negotiate with relevant stakeholders over the next two years to develop a strong international governance framework for human genetic editing.

After two days of review and intensive consultations, WHO's newly established Human Genetics Editor's Advisory Committee on Global Governance and Oversight Standards concluded that the current clinical application of genetic editing of human germ cell line is “irresponsible”.

According to the plan, the committee will conduct a series of face-to-face and online consultations with stakeholders including patient groups, civil society groups, ethicists, and sociologists in the next two years to develop an advisory opinion on the international governance framework for human genetic editing. WHO emphasized that this framework should be scalable and sustainable and applicable to international, regional, national and local levels.

The Commission also agreed that a “central registration system” for human genetic editing research should be created to create an open and transparent database for ongoing work. The Commission requested WHO to proceed immediately with this work.
