In Chengmai county, Hainan province,symposium on proposal about applying for world cultural heritage was held onDec 30th. More than 10 experts have paid much attention on applying for World CulturalHeritage. According to the research and investigation report, experts indicate thatChengmai Bay seacoast, ancient village with volcanic rocks in Nandu River drainagebasin and residential buildings with stones in ancient village with volcanicrocksis competent to apply for national cultural heritage protection unit, and alsoto apply for world cultural heritage.

The researchgroup from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences reported that the Ancient Villagewith Volcanic Rocks has mainly formed by two pieces of historical culturalheritages: one is ancient village with volcanic rocks, the another one is residentialbuildings with stones in ancient village around Chengmai Bay and both sides ofNandu River for thousands of years. These two historical heritages have rich culturalconnotation.

The research group from Chinese Academyof Social Sciences indicates that there are different architectural cultures inthe ancient architectures museum. The world cultural heritage is basicallyin line with the laws in which humans live in harmony with nature. The WorldHeritage Convention focuses on understanding and protecting the heritage siteswhich reflect the harmonious coexistence of human and nature, human interaction,mutual cultural benefits, civilization and to creation. Chengmai heritage sitescan meet this requirement.

Ancient village is the crystal of humanculture. Chengmai can use the practice of Guangdong on Kaiping watchtower andFujian Earth Building for reference. Meanwhile, it should apply for culturalheritage according to its own circumstance. The following points can beconsidered: (1) classify the ancient villages generally; (2) confirm the value,cause and geographical range; (3) clearly reflect the living condition and productionmode; (4) Determine the scope of the history protection level(Absolute reserve);(5) consider to build up museum in the ancient village.
