Hong Kong Has Initiated Dynamic Database for Wushu to Preserve the Cultural Heritages of “Kung Fu”

On April 29th, 2015, City University of Hong Kong stated thatit had cooperated with Chinese Martial Arts Association and had established theworld’s first “Hong Kong Dynamic Database for Wushu” by utilizing the uniquecapturing skill as 360 degree three-dimensional motions to preserve thecultural heritages of “Kung Fu”.

It is reported that this database will completely record the Kung Futradition of Hong Kong and initiate a digital operating mode. It will archiveand keep annotations on all sects of Kong Fu in Hong Kong such as Wing Chun , Lin Jia Hung Kuen and Fujian Yong Chun White Crane KungFu.

There are different sects with their own body mechanical models in Wushu.These Kung Fu skills are mostly transmitted orally, using the words which are onlyknown by professionals. It is necessary to establish a database to record therelated cultural heritages for that some sects of Kung Fu are learned by lessand less people and the related knowledge are facing the risk of  being lost.

According to the plan, Applied Center for Interactive Media and ComputingServices of City University of Hong Kong will make the movements data collectedfrom all sects of Kong Fu into cartoons, utilizing the continuous three-dimensionalvideo capture technology in high-definition and high-speed modes. And theprocess of capturing data is the process to make a detailed four-dimensionalanalysis on Wushu.

City University of Hong Kong has stated that this database will becomethe basis of arranging exhibitions and making installation artworks, which ishelpful to develop the abundant Kung Fu cultural heritages and providematerials for the researches of correlative fields.
