The Earring-Etiquette of Kazakh Girls

The Earring-Etiquette is one of the traditional etiquettes of the Kazakh. For adolescent girls of Kazakh, it marks an important moment of their life. They will accept blessings and gifts from families and friends as well as their neighbours. It is such a ceremonious event.


On October 29th this year, Yelena and Sherhey, a couple of Kazak sisters who live in Sinkiang (a town in County Urumqi), got up early. Their mother had prepared the Kazak traditional dresses for them, Yelena and Sherhey had made up carefully, they would receive the Earring-Etiquette on that day.


Guests came in an endless stream, they stepped into the courtyard, had been invited in the living room and served with a plant of horsemeat hand pilaf after shaking hands with Yelena and Sherhey and their families.


When the etiquette started, Yelena and Sherhey’ grandfathers had given their blessing first, wished these two girls would have a long and happy life, be healthy and happiness. They also wished for every guest presented a good fortune. After then, Yelena and Sherhey’s grandmothers had given their gifts to the girls and also their parents. Yelena and Sherhey had received earrings and bracelets. Elderships had been returned with gifts, it was for their love and care for these two girls.


With the ending of the gift exchanging, everyone danced in the Kazak traditional dance. After dancing, an elder spilled candies to guests which is also an etiquette called “Qia Xiu” appeared in most grand celebrations, to express the respects to all the guests.
