The Jiujia Building: the Traditional Building Style of the Yao Ethnic Group in Village Aizhai
Village Aizhai, which located in Guilin City, is one of the first demonstration villages with local characteristics of Guangxi Province. It has a group of ancient buildings of the Yao Ethnic Group, which is provided with rich Lingnan Style. In ancient times, the area where the Village Aizhai located used to be called “Jiujia”. For hundreds of years, a unique local style has formed in this area by three ethnic groups’ cultures including Yao, Zhuang and Han. Buildings of Jiujia style has features such as slate roofs, red walls with white trims, and so on. These buildings were constructed in the Qing Dynasty and the period of the Republic of China with a rich local style.
In 2010, Village Aizhai has applied for the old village renovation project funds. In recent years, in accordance with the principle as “respecting the local architectural style, keeping the vernacular architecture form and extracting the national symbol”, the village has constructed in an ecological remediation way. At present, 90% of buildings has been re-builded in Village Aizhai, but the unique style has always followed. The Village Aizhai is vibrant and with modern countryside scenery. It is planned to engage in tourism, by using the specific characteristics of the old village, to make a better protection of ethnic characteristics and to make the local construction process getting a living inheritance.
