Inheritance and Protection of Cultural Ecology of the Hoche People

Abstract: The Hoche population ranks the 53rd in Chinese ethnic groups, but as the economy and society develops, the cultural features of Hoche people is dying out. It is of common understanding that cultural diversity should be maintained, so the cultural features of Hoche people should be protected, which means its cultural ecological system should be protected from a holistic perspective to maintain its healthy circulation.

This thesis consists of three sections.


In the first section, it points out the vanishing of Hoche culture features, including hunting and fishing skills which they used to live on for thousands of years, the techniques for making suits made of wild animals’ furs and skins, the food and festival culture of their own and also the ethnic language.


In the second section, it analyses the causes for the vanishing of Hoche culture features. It concludes as three aspects: economic growth; population decrease; cultural influence by other ethnic groups.


In the third section, it suggests for the inheritance and protection of cultural ecology of the Hoche People. It consists of five aspects: firstly, protecting the natural foundations of Hoche culture; secondly, protecting traditional producing techniques; thirdly, protecting traditional cultural forms and the inheritors; fourthly, preventing over-exploitation in the process of cultural protection; and the last, paying a correct treatment for Hoche traditional cultural values, religious beliefs and customs.
