Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University Has Firstly Decoded the Pineapple Genome in the World
On December 3rd,Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University held a newsconference to declare that a research paper named “The Pineapple Genome and The Evolution of CAMPhotosynthesis” which completed by aresearch group from the Genomics and Biotechnology Research Center in thisuniversity has been on Nature Genetics onDecember 2nd. It was the first time to decode the pineapple genome around theworld. This study was completed by a research team led by Professor Ruiguang Ming, combined with 17 research agencies all around the world.
Pineapple ranksTop-2 among tropical fruit in the world. The southern region of Fujian provinceis an important producing area in China and the pineapple is also a major fruitspecies in Fujian-Taiwan Agricultural Demonstration Garden. However, due to thelimited of the self-incompatibility and high heterozygosity, it’s difficult toreform the pineapple varieties and improve the development of this industry
The photosyntheticpathway of pineapple is special which is called CAM. It makes use of thecircadian rhythm to fix the carbon. This study firstly identified all the geneswhich took participate in the CAM and declared that the CAM was conducted bythe change of regulatory sequence which was regulated by circadian genes. It isa great breakthrough to the study of photosynthetic.
Professor Mingsaid that the decoding of the genome could dramatically improve the speed offollow-up study. This research result provided large amounts of genomic dataresources to improve the important character of pineapple and would increasethe development of the pineapple industry.
In particular, as a single-leaf plan, thepineapple t is affined with the gramineae, such as corn, rice and so on. So itwould be the best reference genome to do the comparative genome analysis. Moreover, this result was of great significance for the research anddevelopment of the single-leaf plants.
