Two Tibetan Scenic Spots were Listed into the World Heritage Tentative List

The Department ofHousing and Urban-Rural Development of Tibet Autonomous Region has convened aseminar regarding the preliminary results of the subject called the “strategicstudy on the protection of natural and cultural heritages and the applicationfor the world heritages in Tibet Autonomous Region”. The systemic study of thissubject is the first try in this area and Tibet and is also of greatsignificance for the protection of important heritage resources, culturalinheritance and economic development in this area.

There are 1400 natural and culturalheritage resources with abundant types in Tibet accordingto preliminary estimates. The heritage resources in Tibet areexcellent and have historical cultures, aesthetic and scientific values.However, the application work for world heritage in this area has not beenfully carried out, meanwhile, the protection and management work on the naturaland cultural heritages need to be further.

World heritages are divided into threetypes: cultural heritages, natural heritages, mixed heritages on nature andculture. This study mainly focuses on the natural heritages and the mixedheritages. There is only one world heritage called the Potala Palace historicalbuildings in Tibet, which was listed into the world heritage list in 1994(Jokhang Temple and the Summer Palace of Lhasawere then complementally listed into the list in 2000 and 2001). In addition,there are two mixed heritages listed on the world heritage tentative list of China.They are Yarlung located in Shannan Prefecture (2001) and Tulin-Guge located inNgari Prefecture (2015). The process of applying for world heritage is a longand systematic project. It will take at least 18 months from being listed intothe world heritage tentative list to beginning to apply for world heritage. Alarge number of materials need to be prepared during this period. The worldheritage center will need to designate experts there for field trips.

1. Yarlung scenic spot

Its scope across 6 countiesin Shannan Prefecture. It is mainly characterized by plateau andpalaeogeomorphology, with Tibetan history and Buddhist cultural relics as itscultural connotation, combining Tibetan customs and natural scenery together.It is the typical masterpiece of human and nature in the southern area, whichreflecting the human-earth relationshipand the unique evolutionary processof culture.

2. Tulin-Guge scenic spot

The Tulin geomorphologyand the relics of Guge culture make this scenic spot have distinct characteristicsand prominent values both in nature and culture.
