The National Museum of Intangible Cultural Heritage Initially Locates in Beijing
To build a national museum of intangible cultural heritage is a wish of Peifen GAO,a member of the CPPCC and she has submitted a proposal on the matter in the NPC and CPPCC this year. Now, this wish will come true. The museum has been listedin major national construction projects of cultural facilities, ready toimplement. “The Ministry of Culture replies that the preliminary site selectionis in the Beijing Olympic park. If all goes well, it is about to start in May2016.” Recently,in an interview, Peifen GAO told to reporters.
Inher proposal of building a national museum for intangible cultural heritage, shesays, museums in China are numerous ,but there is not a comprehensive, integratedand centralized permanent theme museum of state-level to continuously displayregional outstanding intangible cultural heritage. She suggests to constructsuch a museum in Beijing, combining entity, literature, video with digital todisplay various representative intangible cultural heritage projects, especiallythe state-level items. The Ministry of Culture responses “the construction ofthe national intangible cultural heritage show place has been organized as amajor national construction project of cultural facilities, that is planning tobuild ‘Chinese Arts and Crafts Galley, Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition’(thetentative name). There are collections in four categories, including arts andcrafts, traditional craftsmanship, traditional music and dance, traditionaldrama, traditional folk customs and so on.”
Before the reply, related departments of the Ministry of Culture have communicatedvwith Peifen GAO, telling her the progress of the project. In GAO’s opinion, thisis not only beneficial to help teenagers to intuitively understand intangiblecultural heritage in China, but also to be a window to show the world Chinesetraditional culture. “Now there are some intangible projects, but they are allsmall, focusing on local characteristics. After the completion of the nationalpavilion, it will be a big platform.”
As the representative inheritor of Chinese Guqin (a seven-stringed pluckedinstrument in some ways similar to the zither),it is not the first time that Peifen GAO submitted the proposal to protect intangible cultural heritage. During the NPC and CPPCC this year, Peifen GAO has also submitted a proposal to listtraditional culture like intangible cultural heritage in the basic educationcurriculum at the same time which gets positive response from the Ministry of Education. Peifen GAO said that protection of intangible cultural heritage has gainedincreasing attention in recent years. However, some intangible projects stillface embarrassment of vacant succession. Since 2011, national inheritors can getten thousand yuan a year, thousands of yuan at the provincial level. “I havecommunicated with other inheritors, finding that actually the intangiblecultural heritage protection departments get very high project funding whileinheritors get less. It is not bad for one who like me have a department towork for. Some living in rural areas or having no fixed work don’t have enough funds for clothing, props and subsequent talents." Peifen GAO says.
