Courtyard of Family Yan in Town Xizhou, Dali, is a valuable heritage of the Bai ethnic group and a treasure in the Chinese architectural history. Family Yan was a very wealthy family in Qing Dynasty in Dali, and their rich asset made it possible to construct an artistic courtyard in such a great scale.

Courtyard of Family Yan was built in 1907, and the distribution of the building group is typical in the traditional architecture of the Bai group. The whole courtyard is natural and spectacular, showing perfectly the traditional culture and philosophy of Bai people. What inspired most is that the Courtyard of Family Yan has been well preserved which means the beauty of the Bai traditional architecture could be appreciated today, and it shows the unique cultural connotation of the Bai ethnic group, showing the splendor and charm of Bai’s culture.
