The Sama Festival: Traditional Celebration of the Dong Ethnic Group

The Sama is the supreme goddess which worshiped by Dong people. Sama means the great progenitress in the Dong language. It is an important tradition to sacrifice Sama in the chosen day between the autumn and the next spring which is called The Same Festival. There is a temple for Sama in each traditional county of the Dong group. The form of building is flexible. The temple of Sama is unavailable expect the 1st and the 15th day of every month according to the Chinese lunar calendar and during The Sama Festival.

 

The Sama Festival has been held in Rongjiang on December 19th, and the celebration of the festival is mysterious and primitive. Dong people from nine counties gather together at the Gurongqun Temple of Sama. And the activity is a good chance to promote cultural inheritance and ethnic identity.

 

The Sama festival has been put in the Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2006. And the date of The Same festival has been set from December 18th to December 20th since 2012.
