The Dongba Paper: the Traditional Hand-made Paper of the Naxi Ethnic Group

The Dongba paper is a kind of hand-made paper of the Naxi ethnic group which is rather rare. It is the important carrier of the Dongba culture which is mainly used to record Dongba scriptures and draw Dongba pantings by the Naxi flamen. Dongba paper is thick and solid enough to be written at both sides due to the traditional papermaking craft and the entire process needs 28 days. Dongba paper is anti-moth-eaten because it is made from canescent wikstroemia, a local plant slightly toxicity which is existed at an elevation from 2,400 miles to 3500 miles. Dongba paper could exist over eight hundred years without artificial damage since the character.

 

In recent years, The Cultural Department of Lijiang City has gradually developed a detailed program of protection and inheritance measures for Dongba papermaking technology, through the creation of inheritance model, supporting the descendants of Dongba paper Shoutu teaching methods, such as, to get effective protection and inheritance. At present, The Old Town of Lijiang has dozens of paper-making workshop production of Dongba paper.

 

The work of protecting Dongba papermaking handicraft has been valued by the government. The scheme has been set in details and the heritage of Dongba papermaking handicraft would be supported by the government. There are plenty of workshops of Dongba paper in Lijian City now. In the meanwhile, various artwares made by Dongba paper, such as books, notebooks, notepads and postcards offer for sale that promotes the development of the local economy.
