“The Mushroom House”: A Kind of Traditional Residential Building of the Hani Ethnic Group
“The Mushroom House” is a kind of traditional residential building of the Hani ethnic group, which located in Township Jiayin(in County Honghe, Yunnan Province). The Mushroom house of the Hani is in a wooden structure with a thatch roof which makes it looks like a mushroom. And the wooden structure has the characteristics of easy construction and low cost, it could also keep more constant temperature which is warm in winter and cool in summer.
The Mushroom house usually constructed as given layout which includes the main hall and the side room. The main hall must be larger and higher than the side room, or the house would be out of the scale and deemed to be ominous by the Hani people.
There are many Mushroom houses which have been replaced by concrete buildings today, yet this unique construction is preserved in a good situation in Township Zuofu, County Honghe. There are 251 Mushroom houses in Township Zuofu, and the percent of the residential building in Zuofu is 84.5%.
