The Wuka Dance: A Traditional Dance of the Yi Ethnic Group
The Wuka Dance is an ancient folk dance of the Yi ethnic group which is widespread in Township Anle, County Mouding of Yunan Province. The Wuka Dance is quite different from other dance styles on its performance. It is very popular among the Yi people since it is related with their daily lifeand production. The music of the Wuka Dance is short and concise, there are over thirty pieces oftune of the Wuka Dance, almost twenty pieces of them are often used. Most of these pieces are love songs. There are no score of these pieces. The music, the dance movement and the clothes are really something.
The Wuka Dance is often performed for events such as the traditional wedding or the traditional festival of the Yi group. In early years, only elderships were allowed to dance, now young people are free to dance it, too. The Wuka Dance need to be learned more by the younger generation to help its heritage, and the local people will be a part of the heritage and protection of the Wuka Dance in the next.
