Twenty Years' Review and Prospect of Modernization Research on Traditional Chinese Medicine
Abstract：The modernization strategy of traditional Chinese medicine ( TCM) has been implemented for 20 years, which has provided a strong impetus to the development of TCM and gained remarkable achievements in scientific research platform, research result, industry scale, clinical evaluation, internationalization and professionals training as well. The achievements of TCM modernization greatly improved the clinical service ability and level of TCM, broadened the scope of service, become the important foundation of the big health industry. TCM has played an irreplaceable role in the health care reform, benefiting people's livelihood, promoting industrial structure adjustment and cultivating strategic emerging industries. This article summarized the main achievements of the modernization of TCM and prospected the direction and tasks in the next 20 years in order to further promote the modernization process of TCM.

1.The quality and efficiency of TCM industry is promoted
The implementation of the TCM modernization strategy has promoted the rapid development of TCM industry. In1996, the total output value of China's TCM industry is 23.5 billion RMB. In last year, it exceeded 730 billion RMB, with an increase of more than 30 times. The output value occupied the proportion of total industrial output value increased from 1/5 to 1/3, making it become one of the pillars of China's pharmaceutical industry.
2. The TCM research platform isdeveloped and perfected
With the increase of the country's investment in the innovation research of TCM, especially the implementation of the special new drugs, a group of high-level TCM research platform has been built and many key technologies have been broken through.
Standardization of research platform has been pushed forward and many research institutes have passed domestic and foreign certification, such as, GLP, GCP, CNAS, ISO and soon. In addition, those research institutes have become the national key laboratory, national engineering laboratories and international co-operation laboratories.
3. There are a number of research results of TCM
The research results are remarkable in the aspect of TCM resources, such as the optimization of planting parameters of TCM materials, the breeding of seed and germchit, the research on TCM genome, the recycling of TCM resources and so on. In addition, the scientific connotation of TCM theory is continually interpreted, and the number of national science and technology awards are also increasing.
4.The level of clinical research of TCM is promoted
Thesuccessful experience of TCM clinical research can be summarized as four aspects: the combination of TCM and Western medicine, the combination of domestic and foreign the combination of clinical and basic and the research and implementation involving multidisciplinary experts.
5.Internationalization process of TCM is accelerated
In 1997, the compound Danshen Dropping Pill was reviewed by FDA, which is an important symbol of the internationalization of TCM. By now, Southeast Asia, Africa and Russia have higher recognition of TCM, and it is easier for TCM to be exported to those countries. At present, a number of Chinese patent medicines is sold in the international market. Moreover, the process of internationalization of TCM has been accelerated and achieved remarkable results.
6.Prospect
TCM is confronted with tremendous demand and opportunities, and the development of modern science and technology provide a strong guarantee for TCM research. We must adhere to the inheritance and innovation to safeguard the healthy and sustainable development of TCM and promote the internationalization of TCM.
