Promoting Development of TCM Standardization by Standardization Strategy

Abstract: In recent years, China has issued a series of relevant policy documents of TCM, which brings new opportunities for the development of TCM. The standardization work of TCM to grasp the opportunity, achieved good development. At the same time, it has made an important contribution to the TCM “going out” and “The Belt and Road” development strategy.

 

Nowadays, the level of standardization is a basic factor of the core competitiveness for countries and regions. Standardization of TCM is the foundation for modernization and internationalization of TCM. It also guarantee the TCM to benefit people’s health all over the world, under the “The Belt and Road” development strategy.

 

There are new opportunities for developing the standardization of TCM. The Outline of TCM Development Strategy(2016-2030 years)” issued by the State Council in 2016 clearly stipulated that the key point of TCM development in the future is to improve the standard system of TCM as a guarantee for the long-term development of TCM in the next fifteen years. “Traditional Chinese Medicine 13th Five-Year Development Plan” issued by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine proposed to improve the standardization of TCM. The promulgation and implementation of the Chinese medicine law have started a new age for the development of TCM’s legalization and standardization. In October 2016, the Ministry of Commerce has launched the project, named “Constructing Standard System of Chinese Medicine Service Trade”.

 

There are also some achievements in the standardization of TCM. In 2009, the National Standardization Management Committee established 5 National Technical Committees for standardization of TCM. Up to now, 37 national standards, 1 industry standards and more than 500 group standards of TCM have been revised. Since 2009, when the Technical Committee of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established by the ISO (international Standardization Organization), ISO/TC249 has issued 20 international standards of TCM, of which17 standards are formulated by China. In 2007, it was the first time that the World Health Organization(WHO) issued the terminology standard of traditional medicine.

 

According to the author, the standardization of TCM will not develop without more basic researches, more promotion, and more talent teams.
